Low-cost and wirelesses-based caving monitoring solution

  • Winiapp provides a low-cost and wirelesses-based monitoring system for caving expeditions and caving rescue operations.
  • Caving is an outdoor activity that involves walking, climbing, and sometimes descending and ascending on a single rope. In this regard, cave rescue is a highly specialized field of wilderness rescue. Thus, monitoring the cavers during their expedition will boost the quality of the rescue operation in an emergency. Therefore, Winiapphas proposed a low-cost and wireless-based monitoring system for caving expeditions or caving rescue operations. The proposed system includes wearable devices for cavers and wireless network nodes. The wearable devices are mounted on the cavers’  helmet and seat harness, which broadcasts the critical sensing data over a long-range wireless link inside the cave environment.  Then, the wireless network nodes, which are placed along the cave passages, receive the data and send it over the multi-hop wireless links to the outside of the cave. At the outside of the cave, the cavers’ data is processed using classifier algorithms to predict the caver’s movements, their approximate locations, and also their health conditions. Finally, this knowledge is shown to the operation manager outside the cave.
  • We have successfully implemented this system at Nezal cave, ZagrosMountain ranges, nearDehdashtcounty, Kohgiluyehand Boyer-Ahmad province, Iran.
