Mongasht Digital Twin

Mongasht Twin is our perpetual or ongoing project to implement the digital twin components of the Mongasht Mountain ecosystem.

The Mongasht region is one of the longest semi-branches of the Zagros Mountain Ranges in Iran. Qarun summit is the peak of Mongasht, located at 31.46, 50.2678, and 3613 meters in height.  Indeed, this mountain range contributes to the formation of numerous rivers that flow through the area. In this sense, the Mongasht has historically played an essential role for nomad populations who use the resource for irrigation, agriculture, nomadic pastoralism, and drinking purposes.   Moreover, there are snowy mountains, suitable oak forests, and various animals and plants that live in this area.

Considering the complex ecosystem processes, the Mongasht Twin aim is to adaptively and mathematically model these processes of Mongasht mountain environments. To create these twins, the Winiapp research team will use advanced technologies such as long-range wireless sensor networks, satellite sensing datasets, cloud computing, and sophisticated data modeling and visualization techniques. To support this, the Winiapp team focuses on providing a novel artificial intelligence-empowered framework for multi-scale representations of complex hydrological and ecosystem processes and their interactions with the landscape ecosystem of Mongasht mountain ranges.

The following products will be included in the Mongasht Twin platform:

1- Real-time wireless-connected monitoring systems for critical parameters in:

  • Forest
  • Canyons and Caves
  • Groundwater levels
  • Snow and Rain
  • Catchments and Rivers
  • Soil moisture and drought

2- Online dataset and geospatial map over Mongasht range including:

  • Daily snow and water equivalent maps
  • Daily average temperature and total precipitation maps
  • Soil moisture maps
  • River discharges as a temporal series

3- Artificial intelligence-empowered models for:

  • Disaster risk management
  • Water resource management
  • Wildlife population management
  • Sustainability-oriented nomad living management
